Cambelt / Timming Belt Services

Don’t waste time worrying about a broken timing belt. We will keep your timing belt on track.

A Cambelt / Timing belt is situated in the front or side of your engine behind the plastic cambelt covers. This belt is designed to reduce friction and generate more horsepower than the previous component called the Timing Chain. It’s essential that your cambelt is replaced at the recommended intervals if you want to avoid a labour intensive and costly repair.

This belt should be changed every 100,000kms or 5 years, whatever comes first. In some engines there are 2 belts, a cambelt/timing belt or a balance belt – if you are unsure contact us with your make and model and we can advise you.

The best way to explain the importance of a cambelt is to imagine a push bike. If the chain breaks or comes off, the bike stops! This is what happens when a cambelt snaps, except it’s far easier to fix a bike chain. The cost lies not in replacing the belt itself, but in the damage caused to the engine when the belt goes.

It is really important that you find out when the cambelt was last replaced, or due for replacement if you’re buying a second hand car.  If it can’t be verified, you may be best to walk away. This is one of the most important elements in any vehicle pre-purchase inspection.

Some engine designs are more prone to damage than others. Also some engines have 2 belts, a cambelt and timing belt or a balance belt. Ask one of our mechanics if you have any questions about yours.
